...I'm jumping back into blogging! These last few months have been hectic, and most spare time spent in recovery mode! But I have a few sewing projects to show ya'll, along with a few pictures from our trip to the beach last week!

(Eady seemed to do a lot to connect with her inner child. Bubbles? Check. Playground? Check.)

I was reading this passage the other day and it really struck me just how much I don't depend on God. I mean, especially with the small stuff. The things that I think really don't matter, but....they do. If I can't let God handle the petty situations in my life, can I still let go when it comes to the big ones? The Lord planned it long ago. That just makes me feel secure. HE planned my life. I just need to stop worrying and start living the life He's given me!

Dinner Party

Well it's been awhile since I've been on here and I am very sorry! Life just seems to careen along at a rather quick pace! When I made this pie yesterday though, I had to share the recipe - it is delicious!

Cay Lime Pie

(pronounced "key")

Originally from Ship to Shore

Filling:
4 egg yolks
1 can condensed milk
1/2 cup lime juice
4 eggs whites
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
gratings from 1 lime

Beat egg yolks until soft and lemon colored. Beat in condensed milk and lime juice, and continue to beat with electric mixer for 2-3 minutes. (if you want to do it by hand, it just says "for a long time" :)) Pour in cooled 9 in pie crust. Beat egg whites until nearly stiff, then add sugar and vanilla and continue beating for a few seconds. spread meringue over pic, make peaks with spoon and sprinkle the whole show with grated lime zest. Voila!

Pie Crust:
1 cup flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup butter, softened
1/4 teaspoon salt
4-5 tablesoppns cold milk

Mix flour, sugar, butter and salt with fork or pastry blender. Add milk little by little. Form into ball of dough and chill if possible before rolling out. Bake at 425 for 10-15 minutes.

With no heed to the more conventional guidelines, I decided that it would be easier to just press the pie crust dough into the pan without having to go to all that trouble of chilling, rolling, etc. The end result was that it totally stuck to the pie plate and required lots of scraping to get it out. If you like really un-pie shaped pieces and aren't trying to impress anyone, go for it! Otherwise, follow the directions.

After dessert, we played a little game.....

Cape Lookout, Part Two

Dear Readers ~ I'm terribly sorry for the lapse in time!! But without further ado..... Part Deux! (hey! That rhymes!)

I think I mentioned the card tournament last year when I posted about our trip. As usual, I lost horribly. My grandparents and sister are the "card sharks" of the family.... apparently I did not inherit the gene!

Anyway, Eady will try to get me to play with her as much as possible to get her score up (she knows she can win!) and I comply.

There are several run-down houses left on the island - relics of the days before the park service took over.

On our last day at the island we decided to hike to the tree you see here in the picture - the highest one. It was (let me tell you) MUCH easier said than done. We hiked through dense bushes and dead (scratchy) undergrowth just to get to where this picture was taken. But the scenery was beautiful around the marsh.

Once we got through the marsh, the terrain changed a little. No more scratchy bushes anymore, just don't step on a cactus.

This isn't THE tree, that one would not have been easy to climb!

And then we turned around and almost ran into this.....

Here is Eady standing in front of the big tree. See how her pants are wet? That's how deep we went crossing the marsh.

Right after this picture was taken I got stung by a wasp!

Aaaaaand crossing the marsh again on the way back. If you could have heard me on the last stretch it sounded somewhat like "Ooooooo! Ouch! *gasp* My poor legs!"
We had so much fun on our trip! Glad I could share it with all of my readers!
Now on to more up to date things~
My sister and I have been doing a ton of knitting recently and I will post the products soon! Tomorrow begins Bramblewood Fashion's Modest Fasion week so expect a slew of fashion posts this week.

Cape Lookout, Part One

I'm sharing a few pictures from our annual trip to the Outer Banks . . . we returned last from a wonderful time in the beautiful weather. (usually not the case :))

The above picture is the sunrise on Day 1 - we left at 4 am.

Once we settled in, the fishing began. Some of the species captured included whiting, pompano, bluefish, drum, etc. We only kept the whiting and a few pompano. Fish fry . . .yum!

My dad caught this small shark after hooking a really big one that got away.

We did a little bit of shelling while on the island. Eady found these pretty sand dollars, then gave them to me to put in my pocket. They all broke.

This year the park service opened the lighthouse to the public, so for the first time we could climb it!

Dove Hunt

Went dove hunting yesterday....

Lots of fun....

Not very many doves...

But Eady got two, Daddy eight...

As for me...well... lets just say I'm out of practice.

Ate opening day's fruits and yesterday's for dinner tonight - Yum!

(and yes, that green stuff in the background of the picture of the dead birds is my knitting project - hunting and knitting DO mix, regardless of what may be commonly believed.)

Regency Spencer + Fair Project

Cannot wait for the weather to cool off... velveteen is a little warm. Using the Sense and Sensibility Spencer/Pelisse pattern (many thanks to Caroline for letting me borrow it!) I made this spencer a few weeks ago. The pattern was fairly easy to follow and the project was a quick one.

I love the diamond in the back! And when I went to find buttons I was so happy to discover four brown velveteen covered ones. They were a little smaller than what I wanted but oh well, it still made me happy :)

I'm sorry for the poor quality pictures.... it was raining and we couldn't take them outside! When I wear it later this fall (too hot now!) I promise to post something a little better.

Now I need a dress to match it well.... hmmm...

Regency Stays

The new stays......

This time I used plastic cable ties for the boning.
It worked very well! I just put two in each channel.
No more ordering metal boning from Canada! These turned out really well and fit me so much better than the old ones. I had to make them two sizes smaller, but finally I have a perfect fit. It also makes all my dresses fit better. I finished the spencer, and will post about it soon!

Fair projects - Part I

I have felt terrible about not blogging as much as I would like. However, I have been VERY busy. Lots of work on projects for the fairs coming up this fall. :)

Back into Knitting

Like many other activities, I often lose motivation and drop it for weeks, even months at a time. Knitting is definitely one of those things. However, I was recently inspired to pick it up again. Here are some of the results. I made another blue bib, but forgot to take a picture of it before I gave it away. (of course!) This petal bib was fairly easy except I had a little trouble with the "short rows" which necessitated quite a bit of unraveling...

Tonight's occupation will be collecting small, round, blue objects... can you guess?

Again, I used S&S's Regency gown pattern. I went down a size with this dress and like it so much better than the green linen one. I also altered the sleeves and neckline. These things are so much fun to make! Please stop me from buying more fabric....oh wait I already did!

I have been meaning to do this post for a month now!
After the bushes were eliminated, we had four pine trees cut down. I disliked having to take them out, but it really was impossible to have optimal sun for the planters without doing so. (Less pinecones to pick up, anyway ;)

Then the planters were built...

City by the Sea

There are not many pictures, for seconds after the last one was taken my camera got dropped in the water and refused to work afterwords! However, as it was the third camera of mine that had been dropped, lost, etc., the feeling was pretty numb. The rest of the weekend was fun, though. We went thrifting in the area and swimming too!

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

Many recipes may claim this title...but none are truly superior to this!

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 egg
1 egg yolk
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper. Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. In a medium bowl, cream together the melted butter, brown sugar and white sugar until well blended. Beat in the vanilla, egg, and egg yolk until light and creamy. Mix in the sifted ingredients until just blended. Stir in the chocolate chips by hand using a wooden spoon. Drop cookie dough 1/4 cup at a time onto the prepared cookie sheets. Cookies should be about 3 inches apart. Bake for 15 to 17 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the edges are lightly toasted. Cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Crunchy on the edges, chewy in the middle, perfection.

It is so easy to judge others by what they say, do, or wear. Having found friends in people I had previously discarded with contemptible pride, this lesson has been taught me many times. On the contrary, a few people I know have committed horrible acts I never believed them possible of. Years later, I now regret these mistakes, but I am thankful for the Lord's teaching.
While we cannot see into the heart of man as God does, we can look farther than skin deep. Appearances mean nothing to God, for the importance of a man's character far outweighs all other traits. For a long time our family has wanted to expand our garden. We have four approx. 5 by 8 foot planters already, but that only holds a few types of vegetables. So a few weeks ago, the demolition required to make room for new planting space began!

There used to be bushes all around this pine tree, but they have been transplanted.

So often it feels like my life is all about planning, preparing, waiting, looking forward to - all future events.While this is not inherently bad, what James is saying in vs. 14 is that we are not guaranteed even our next breath. We should prepare, but with the knowledge of God's complete sovereignty. This reminds me of a quote I once heard:

"Learn as if you were going to live forever.
Live as if you were going to die tomorrow."

I realize that I need some new lacing!

I really love this pattern, except for the sizing problem. I measure about a 12, so I made these in a 10, and they are almost too big. If I used the pattern again I would definitely make an 8. Otherwise it was smooth sailing!
My dress is done except for the hem and buttonholes - so expect pictures fairly soon.

This week - Philippians 4:6-7

Anxious for nothing. It's hard, isn't it? Hardly can we let a day pass without worrying over something or other. And does it improve the circumstances? Of course not, for "which of you can by being anxious can add a single cubit to his life's span?" (Matthew 6:27) None can. Anxiety only increases life's troubles, deepens sorrow, and compromises physical health.
So bringing our requests to God remains the only thing to be done. However, this supplication must be accompanied by thanksgiving. For what is ours that has not been given to us? (I Corinthians 4:7) Be thankful that you have family or events or things to worry about! Just giving it all up to the Lord takes a load of cares away. And what could be more comforting than 'the peace of God'?

Hope Deferred

Today's verse is Proverbs 13:12, another personal favorite.

In Hebrew, the usage of the word hope (towcheleth) translates as expectation. When a strong expectation is deferred or put off for a long period of time, it will cause heartache. For young people such as myself, applying this verse to my life means not setting my heart on any specific person, place, or thing. Because of this verse, I know that it is extremely important for me to guard my heart, for the sinking feeling of not receiving something long hoped for will make the heart sick. But when my desire is fulfilled, that is a tree of life. So I must delight myself in the Lord and He will give me the desires of my heart.

Hi Everyone!
Sorry I've been gone so long!

I've decided to take a favorite Bible verse every Friday - quote it and explain what it means to me. I'll start today with Romans 8:28, which being the "theme verse" for my blog, I think is an appropriate place to start.

"And we know that God causes all things to work
together for good to those who love God, to those
who are called according to His purpose."

The small section in my Bible that contains this verse is entitled "Our Victory in Christ." Any Christian who trusts Christ as Savior and Lord has victory over the sin and death of this world. Verse 28 demonstrates a victory over fear, that no matter what I may be going through in my life, God has control. He knows everything that goes on in my life (and yours too!) and can use anything to glorify Himself. This is not an excuse for sin, however. The consequences that we often suffer bring a pain which, although it may not be evident for years, eventually aids us in learning from our mistakes.
This verse has been a comfort to me, most often during hard times. Yet because "everything works together for good', I have nothing to fear. The promise of eternal life certainly puts the minuscule events of this life into perspective!

All this talk of victory reminds me of the words to one of my favorite hymns -

Faith is the Victory

His banner over us is love,
Our sword the Word of God;
We tread the road the saints above
With shouts of triumph trod.
By faith they, like a whirlwind's breath,
Swept on o'er every field;
The faith by which they conquered death
Is still our shining shield.

Chemise

I've been wanting to make a regency style dress for myself for at least 10 months. Why I haven't gotten around to it is another post. But, finally, the first step is over - I made the chemise using the Sense and Sensibility pattern.

Flat-felling all the seams was definitely the most, well, trying part of making this. All the rest came quite easily.

It is very cold here!

Before moving on to the stays, I'm going to quit procrastinating and make something that has been on my "to sew" list for too long!
But I have to get some fabric first - good thing those JoAnn's coupons came in the mail today...

Cincinnati : Part Two

At long last! The second (and final) installment of our trip. I never got any pictures at the actual conference, so these are from the other events of the journey. Except Goodwill, but that's a whole nother post! I'll narrate as we go along...

After lunch we walked out on the deck looking over the lake and park. You cant tell in these pictures, but it was snowing very lightly at the time. You probably can tell, however, that it was very windy!

At dinner everyone ate "Cincinnati chili", an event I'm not likely to ever repeat.

One night at the Creation Museum they had a live nativity, which we attended in the freezing cold!

The rest of the outside "park" was decorated with lights. Here the lights are being reflected in the lake, which was partially frozen.

Finally, we headed home. After five days in freezing cold, snowy weather, I was very ready to return to our more temperate climate.

Again, I am not asleep. And Baby definitely isn't.
(Why did we ever give her that?!?!)

Somewhere in the mountains there appeared a sea of cloud.

I had a great time at the conference with old friends and new, and received much knowledge from the speakers presenting. I failed to take pictures at the conference part but it was the reason for the trip! Through the wisdom shared I was able to gain a more Biblical understanding of the Sufficiency of Scripture.

Cincinnati - Part One

After thirteen hours of watching movies, reading, knitting, sleeping, talking, singing and comsuming excessive amounts of junk food, we finally arrived in Covington/Cincinnati. The first day we actually went to the Creation Museum, but I 'm doing these posts out of order. On Thursday we went to the Cincinnati Art Museum. They had some pretty cool stuff. Enjoy!

In Virginia and West Virginia we met Snow! Hi Snow! I love you! I miss you too! We never get to see each other.

Just sharing some of the pictures from our Thanksgiving trip to the mountains. We had a great time with family, hiking the Appalachian, going to Goodwill (of course), and antiquing.
Also today is the last day of NaBloPoMo, finally.
These are only the pictures from one camera, I'll have the others up in the next few days.

I loved this little valley!

At the beginning of this hike, you start on one side of the mountain and sort of work your way around to another side while going up. The first side is extremely windy and cold, and these pictures were taken near the beginning. When we rounded that curve and hit the sun, those jackets and gloves and sweaters started coming off. On the way back we met another group all bundled up - us in our rolled up sleeves and all.
They probably wondered if we were from Alaska.

Cranberry Thumbprints
from Martha Stewart Living

1 cup flour
1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
1/2 t salt
1 stick butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 t vanilla
1 egg

Preheat the oven to 350. Mix dry ingredients. Combine butter and 1/4 cup sugar. Add the vanilla and egg yolk to butter mixture, combine. Gradually (or not!) add the dry. Roll dough into balls, roll in egg white and then remaining sugar. Place balls on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and press thumb into the middle of each cookie. Bake 15 minutes. When done, fill the hole with jam or jelly of your choice.

I'm sorry today's post is so late! I am not on my computer, so have no access to my pictures and scrambled for yesterday's post and today's!

So anyway, I was on talbots.com the other day and found this really cute dress. Immediately the "I can make that!" thought came into my head, but we all know it will never happen! So I'll just look at pictures and hope to find it at a yard sale next summer!

I hate it when builders absolutely destroy the trees in their area before constructing huge, pretentious homes in the place of the graceful (gentle) giants.

In fact, to quote someone I know well, "It makes you wanna throw up."

Large cities frustrate me.

However, I enjoy the culinary delights that such metropolises offer.

I cannot have my cake and eat it too.

Rutherford Wynd Pumpkin Bread
The Heritage of Southern Cooking
Camille Glenn

1 stick butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 cups flour
1/8 t baking soda
1 1/4 t baking powder
1/2 t cinnamon
3/4 t salt
1/2 t nutmeg
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup pecans or walnuts

Preheat oven to 350. Cream the butter and sugar, add eggs and continue to beat until thick and smooth. Sift the flour with soda, powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add the flour, pumpkin, and water alternately to the creamed butter and eggs. Do not over beat. Fold in the nuts with a spatula. Spoon the batter in to a large 2 lb loaf pan. Place the pan on the middle rack of the oven and bake about one hour.
Let cool before slicing. (but I know you won't be able to wait that long)

(I, naturally, skipped all the sifting and "alternataly adding" parts. I also used currants instead of nuts. It was still good.)

The other day, my mom left the coupon book at the grocery store. (Capital crime in coupon world, for those of you who don't know)

I walked in the kitchen. "It's not in the car."
"What? What do you mean it's not in the Car? Did you look in the back seat?"

Of course I did. Well, anyway the nice man at the store kept it for us, a good thing because triple coupons was the next day. Here are the results.
